Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed one demerit point following an on-field incident involving Australian debutant Campbell Konstas during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The altercation occurred at the end of the 10th over on Day 1 when Kohli made physical contact with Konstas, sparking a heated exchange. Match referee Andy Pycroft sanctioned Kohli for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically Article 2.12, which prohibits inappropriate physical contact during international matches. Kohli accepted the penalty without the need for a formal hearing.
The incident attracted criticism from cricket legends, with Ricky Ponting condemning Kohli’s actions, stating the Indian star "instigated the confrontation" by deliberately approaching Konstas. Ponting remarked on Channel Seven that fielders should avoid such confrontations, highlighting that Kohli crossed the pitch unnecessarily. Former India coach Ravi Shastri also criticized Kohli’s behavior, cautioning against overstepping boundaries of sportsmanship.

Despite the incident, Konstas maintained composure and delivered an impressive performance, scoring 60 off 65 balls in his debut Test innings. When questioned post-match, Konstas downplayed the incident, attributing the bump to the heat of the moment. His aggressive strokeplay kept the crowd entertained as he fearlessly took on Jasprit Bumrah, who remained India’s standout bowler with three wickets. Konstas' innings ended at the hands of Ravindra Jadeja, but his partnership with Usman Khawaja provided Australia with a strong start.
At the close of Day 1, Australia stood at 311/6, with Steve Smith unbeaten on 68. While all of Australia’s top four batters notched half-centuries, none managed to convert them into triple figures. Kohli’s penalty adds a layer of controversy to what has otherwise been an exciting and competitive Test match.
