December 23, 2024 | Srinagar: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent Kashmiri religious and political leader, has called for fairness and justice in the implementation of reservation policies. Taking to social media, Mirwaiz expressed concern over the current reservation framework, highlighting that it undermines the interests of the General and open merit categories.
In his statement, Mirwaiz stressed the importance of safeguarding the interests of all segments of society without disadvantaging any particular group. He urged authorities to address the grievances of the open merit category, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
Mirwaiz extended his support to the Open Merit Students Association (OMSA-JK), which is currently staging a protest against the reservation system. "I would be part of it if authorities allowed," he stated, adding that his delegation will represent him at the protest in solidarity.
Furthermore, Mirwaiz indicated his intention to raise the issue during his sermons at Srinagar's historic Jama Masjid as soon as he is permitted to do so.
The statement has sparked discussions across social and political circles, with many awaiting the response of the authorities to the concerns raised by the Mirwaiz and the protesting students.
