Imphal, June 8 – Tensions escalated in Manipur after the arrest of Asem Kanan, a key member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at Imphal Airport on Sunday. In response, the group has called for a 10-day statewide shutdown, plunging the state into unrest once again.
Protests Erupt Across Imphal
Following Kanan's detention, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Imphal, blocking major roads with burning tyres, wooden planks, and debris. Security forces fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and mock bombs to disperse the crowds. At least 11 people, including a 13-year-old boy, were injured during the clashes.
Curfew and Internet Shutdown Imposed
Authorities swiftly imposed curfew in Bishnupur district and enforced prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching. To prevent the spread of misinformation, internet services were suspended for five days across all valley districts of Manipur starting late Saturday.
Shutdown Announced by Arambai Tenggol
Calling the arrest "targeted and unjust," the Meitei organization Arambai Tenggol announced a 10-day total shutdown across Manipur, demanding the unconditional release of its detained volunteers. Two other members were reportedly detained earlier this week.
Political Leaders Seek Intervention
Over 25 MLAs from BJP, NPP, Congress, and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba met with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, urging swift intervention to de-escalate the situation and ensure the release of those arrested. The Governor has assured that the matter is being reviewed.
Background: Ethnic Tensions Persist
Manipur has been witnessing ethnic unrest between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since 2023. The latest incident has reignited those tensions. The state is currently under President’s Rule, with law and order being managed directly by the Centre.
