New Delhi, Aug 20: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday cleared the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, imposing a blanket ban on real-money games (RMGs) in India, covering both chance- and skill-based formats.
The move directly impacts major platforms such as Dream11, My11Circle, WinZO, RummyCircle, Junglee Rummy, PokerBaazi, and MyTeam11, all of which operate on real-money models. Stock-linked gaming firms, including Nazara Technologies, also faced a sharp decline in share value following the announcement.
According to industry estimates, RMGs contribute nearly 86% of the $3.7 billion online gaming sector, supporting around 200,000 jobs, generating over ₹25,000 crore in taxes, and drawing significant foreign investment. Analysts warn the ban could cause annual GST revenue losses of nearly ₹20,000 crore.
The bill will now move to the Rajya Sabha for debate. If cleared, it will require Presidential assent before becoming law.
