Srinagar, Aug 21 (KL): A Parliament report has revealed alarming food safety concerns in Jammu and Kashmir, where nearly 15% of tested food items between 2020 and 2025 were declared unsafe.
According to official data, 41,717 samples were analysed over the past five years, and 6,202 failed to meet safety standards. The highest number of tests was conducted in 2022–23, with 13,502 samples, out of which 1,195 were adulterated.
In 2020–21, 871 of 4,094 samples failed quality checks, while 1,735 out of 8,109 samples failed in 2021–22, which also saw the highest penalties imposed (1,931). The following years continued to record thousands of penalties for violations.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged J&K authorities to strengthen enforcement and fill vacant posts of food safety officers to tackle the rising issue of food adulteration.
