Handwara Police have registered a case against a social media user for allegedly spreading false and misleading information on Facebook with the intent to create public unrest and malign reputations.

According to officials, the action was taken following a complaint received at Police Station Handwara regarding a Facebook post uploaded by one Mohammad Yousuf. The post reportedly contained fabricated allegations aimed at tarnishing the image of a local setup and inciting disorder in the area.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the police registered FIR No. 232/2025 under Sections 353(1) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Handwara. An investigation has been initiated to verify the facts and identify any additional individuals involved in circulating the false content.

A police spokesperson emphasized that Handwara Police are committed to maintaining peace and public order, warning that misuse of social media to provoke unrest or spread misinformation will not be tolerated.

 “Social media users are advised to act responsibly and verify facts before posting, sharing, or circulating any content online. Strict legal action shall be taken against individuals found involved in such unlawful acts that disrupt public peace or defame others,” the spokesperson added.{KNT}
