Rajouri/Jammu, Apr 18 (PTI) — The Army has initiated an inquiry after a university professor, Liaqat Ali, alleged he was assaulted by soldiers during a vehicle checking operation near Laam village in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir late Thursday night. A video circulating online shows the professor bleeding from the head.
According to the Army, the vehicle was stopped as part of a routine operation based on intelligence about possible militant movement in the area. “Preliminary findings suggest that the individual attempted to snatch a weapon from the soldiers, leading to a scuffle,” said an official statement. However, the Army added that a full inquiry is underway and assured that any personnel found guilty of misconduct will face strict action.
The professor, posted at IGNOU in New Delhi, claimed in a post on social media platform X that he was assaulted without provocation. “My entire family is in the Army. I’ve always been proud of that. But today, I was hit on the head with a weapon by the very people I trusted,” Ali wrote, sharing a photo of his injury.
The incident occurred while Ali was returning from a family function in Kalakote with relatives. He expressed shock and disappointment over the incident, questioning whether justice had become “a privilege of the uniform alone.”
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and urged citizens to cooperate in ensuring collective security in the region.
